Vertical Forest, or Bosco Verticale

Vertical Forests

The majority of people visit the Upcountry region for the obvious reasons of forestry and abundance of green fields. What If I tell you that a particular Boeri Studio from Milan, Italy has already realized the dream of urban vertical greenery!

Appropriately named vertical forest, or Bosco Verticale, if you insist upon the original Italian version.

The residential towers were the realization of Boeri Studio’s imaginative trio of Stefano Boeri, Giovanni La Varra, and Gianandrea Barreca. Additionally, it also incorporated input from botanists and horticulturalists. The Towers are geographically located between Via Federico Confalonieri and Via Gaetano de Castillia in the Milan district of Porta Nuova, Italy.

The Bosco Verticale Towers are 360 feet and 249 feet tall, respectively and are home to a whopping 900 trees (with tree height ranging from 3, 6 or 9 meters). Moreover, more than 2,000 variants of floral plants and shrubs are planted in relation to the Tower’s position towards the sun. The living exterior means the surface is continually evolving, changing into seasonal colors and offering the residents a spectacular view of the cityscape.

To have a better idea consider this: in terms of trees on a flat land, each Bosco Verticale equates to an area of 7000 m2 of the forest. Additionally, the vegetal system of the Towers aids in building a microclimate, produces humidity, engrosses CO2 and produces oxygen. The plants of Vertical Forest were grown exactly for these Towers and were pre-cultivated. Over a period of time, the plants gradually acclimatized with the structure of the buildings.

The Vertical Forest’s residential units range from comfortable one bedroom apartments to spacious, three bedroom apartments. Irrespective of the number of bedrooms, all units look out onto the illuminating green facade of the building.

The architectural aficionados were quick to acknowledge and laud this urban model of green living. The Vertical Forest was bestowed upon the International Highrise Award in 2014. An award given by the city of Frankfurt to honor exemplary structures that are at least 328 feet tall. The five finalists were chosen from 26 candidates of 17 countries. Moreover, the year 2015 also brought the accolade of being the Best Tall Building WorldWide.

Therefore, the next time you tour Milan, do not forget to stay at Bosco Verticale for merely $185. The probability is high that you would be tempted to check the price of the units too which starts from a cool Million dollars.
