Bubbly Alternatives
Southeast England, United Kingdom
One does not typically connote Great Britain with great winemaking, but this emerging region just north of the Channel is drawing the attention of serious vintners. Just last year, Taittinger made history as the first French champagne house to purchase land in England, a stretch of 69 hectares in Kent. West Sussex and East Sussex are also home to a range of estates with exceptional sparkling offerings. Naturally, British wines come with a dose of British humor and the inevitable friendly jab at their French neighbors: Gusbourne Estate, which uses the champenoise method obviously borrowed from French viticulture, prefers to cheekily label their wines as méthode anglaise.
Try these: Blanc de Blancs or Brut Reserve from Gusbourne Estate; Nyetimber’s Classic Cuvée and Demi-Secs; and Exton Park’s Rosé, the first English sparkling wine to be made from the Pinot Meunier grape.
