Buckingham Palace Summer Opening

Each year there’s a special themed exhibition at Buckingham Palace to coincide with the public opening of the State Rooms during August and September. In 2016 (when the Queen will celebrate her ninetieth birthday) the exhibition will be devoted to the royal wardrobe. The Queen always looks most comfortable in a headscarf and sturdy dog-walking gear but she can hardly sit down to a state banquet in her jeans and OTT dressing-up goes with the job. ‘Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen’s Wardrobe’ will use dress, jewellery and accessories to chart royal fashions from the 1920s to the 2010s, highlighting her Maj’s favourite British designers, including Sir Norman Hartnell, Sir Hardy Amies and Ian Thomas. As well as representing ceremonies such as the Coronation, the displays will include outfits worn at weddings, christenings and other family celebrations.

A visit to the State Rooms usually takes around two to two and a half hours. Be prepared for airport-style security and don’t expect to get away with taking any selfies.
