The historic Strawberry Train will circulate again next weekend
The historic Strawberry Train is put back into circulation for the spring and fall season. It will do so on weekends from Saturday, April 22, with trips that will last until November 12. The circulations will have Aranjuez as their destination: city declared a Cultural Landscape a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.
The train, opened in 1984, runs through spring and autumn weekends the route of the first railway that the Community of Madrid had: it was built in 1851 by order of Isabel II and the objective was to unite the capital with the Royal Palace of Aranjuez.
From the Spanish Railways Foundation they explain that the program focuses on outdoor activities, with different itineraries, and all include strawberries from Aranjuez on the return trip.
¿What itineraries are there?
- ‘ Strawberries with cream ’. Round trip, tour by urban tourist train ( Chiquitrén ) from Aranjuez station and guided tours on foot and by coach through the monumental area and gardens.
- ‘ Tagus Strawberries ’. Round trip, tour by tourist boat on the Tagus River and guided walking and coach tours of the monumental area and gardens.
- ‘ Natural Strawberries ’. Round trip and free visit to Aranjuez.
- ‘ Royal Strawberries ’. Includes a visit to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, entrance to the Faluas Museum and guided tours on foot and by coach through the monumental area and gardens.
In addition, three other combined routes have been established:
- ‘ Nata del Tajo ’. Round trip, tour by urban tourist train ( Chiquitrén ), guided walking and coach tours of the monumental area of Aranjuez, tour by tourist boat on the Tagus River, guided walking tours of the historic gardens and strawberries of Aranjuez on the return trip to Madrid.
- ‘ Royal Nata ’. Round trip, tour by urban tourist train ( Chiquitrén ), guided walking and coach tours of the monumental area of Aranjuez, visit to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and strawberries of Aranjuez on the return trip to Madrid.
- ‘ Tagus Real ’. Round trip, tour by tourist boat on the Tagus River, guided walking tours of historical gardens, visit to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and strawberries of Aranjuez on the return trip to Madrid.
¿When does the train run in 2023?
The dates for this spring-autumn season are as follows:
- April: 22, 23, 29 and 30
- May: 1, 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28
- June: 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25
- September: 16, 17, 23, 24 and 30
- October: 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29
- November: 11 and 12
Strawberry Train Schedule and Tickets
The Strawberry Train part of the Madrid Railway Museum at 10am and returns from Aranjuez station at 6:36 p.m., arriving in Madrid at 7:26 p.m. Tickets range from 27 to 53 euros, depending on the chosen itinerary. Tickets can be purchased at the Web page from the train or at the box office of the Railway Museum from Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The train also has a app ( for both Google Play and the Apple Store ) that includes useful information for travelers who get on board.
The commissioning of this thematic train, which has been in operation for more than 30 years, is a joint initiative of the Spanish Railways Foundation, the Community of Madrid, the Aranjuez City Council and National Heritage.
