LA County approves $40M makeover of The Music Center plaza

The reboot will be helmed by Rios Clementi Hale Studio

A major makeover of the 53-year-old plaza between the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Mark Taper Forum in Downtown won approval from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, The Music Center announced today.

“This new plaza will become a much-sought-after gathering space—Los Angeles’s town square—for all of our county residents,” Supervisor Hilda Solis said.

The $40-million upgrade to The Music Center’s plaza will expand the useable space and add a restaurant, a wine bar, permanent restrooms, and a welcome center.

Designed by Rios Clementi Hale Studios, the plaza’s reboot will include a “widening and flattening” of the the pedestrian entry off Grand Avenues, and the addition of escalators there. The redesign will also lift up the “sunken” area of the plaza, and relocate the “Peace on Earth” sculpture in the plaza’s fountain to a spot just west of where it sits now.

The changes to the plaza will allow its capacity for events to double from 2,500 to 5,000 people and “substantially” improve access to the area for visitors with impaired mobility.

The Music Center plans to raise $5 million to pay for public programming in the new space. It’s expected to be complete in spring 2019.
