Take a look at mixed-user bringing 695 apartments to Santa Monica Boulevard near Highland

It’s expected to be complete by late 2019

Work is underway now on developer AvalonBay Communities’s apartment and retail complex on Santa Monica Boulevard, and new renderings give us a look at what the 695-unit project will look like when complete.

Located at Santa Monica Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue, the structure will also includeabout 20,000 square feet of retail space and 56 units of affordable housing. Koning Eizenberg Architecture is the design architect on the project. Togawa Smith Martin is the development’s executive architect.

AvalonBay bought the property for this project in 2015, paying almost $100 million. “The size of the project is such that it has the potential to change the neighborhood and create a critical mass,” AvalonBay vice president of development Mark Janda told the Los Angeles Business Journal at the time.

There are already similar (albeit smaller) projects planned close to the AvalonBay site at 6677 Santa Monica. The development will sit about a quarter-mile east of Onni’s planned mixed-user at 6901 Santa Monica. Onni’s project is expected to hold 231 housing units, including 15 for very-low income tenants, and 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

AvalonBay’s project is expected to be fully complete in November 2019, a company spokesperson tells Curbed.
